Fire Mitigation

Protecting Colorado properties from wildfire risk through professional land management, substrate coatings, and heavy equipment clearing.

Reduce Your Wildfire Risk

Colorado's Front Range faces some of the highest wildfire risk in the nation. Dense brush, dead timber, and overgrown vegetation create fuel ladders that allow fires to spread rapidly — threatening homes, outbuildings, and lives.

BCP Outdoors provides comprehensive fire mitigation services designed to create defensible space around your property. Our team combines heavy equipment land clearing with professional substrate coatings to give your structures the best possible protection.

Fire mitigation land clearing on Colorado Front Range property

What We Offer

1

Heavy Equipment Land Clearing

We deploy excavators, skid steers, and mulching equipment to remove dense brush, dead trees, and overgrown vegetation. Our operators create defensible space buffers that meet Colorado state guidelines and insurance requirements.

  • Brush and shrub removal
  • Dead tree and snag clearing
  • Slash pile management
  • Defensible space zoning
  • Slope and terrain work
2

Substrate Coatings

We apply fire-resistant substrate coatings to structures, fences, decks, and outbuildings. These treatments penetrate wood and other combustible materials to significantly reduce ignition risk from ember cast and radiant heat.

  • Deck and fence treatment
  • Outbuilding and barn protection
  • Wood siding application
  • Long-lasting fire-resistant formula
  • Compliant with Colorado fire codes
3

Ongoing Maintenance Programs

Defensible space requires regular upkeep as vegetation regrows. We offer annual and seasonal maintenance programs to keep your property in compliance and your risk low year after year.

  • Annual re-inspection
  • Seasonal brush mowing
  • Re-treatment of coated surfaces
  • Documentation for insurance providers
  • Priority scheduling for existing clients

Proven Steps That Make a Difference

When a wildfire approaches, the actions you've taken in advance determine whether your home survives. These are the measures we implement — and recommend — because they have a documented track record of reducing ignition and slowing fire spread.

1

Sherwin-Williams Fire Retardant Coatings

We apply Sherwin-Williams fire retardant coatings to exterior wood surfaces, decks, fences, and outbuildings. These products use intumescent technology — when exposed to heat, the coating expands to form an insulating char layer that inhibits flame spread and dramatically reduces heat penetration into the substrate. The result is a surface that resists ignition far longer than untreated wood, giving firefighters and suppression systems more time to act.

2

Noncombustible Zone Around the Structure

The area immediately surrounding your home — typically the first 0 to 5 feet — is the most critical. We clear this zone of all combustible materials: mulch, wood piles, propane tanks, patio furniture, and dense plantings. Replacing organic mulch with gravel, stone, or bare soil in this zone eliminates the fuel bridge that allows ground fire to reach your foundation and siding.

3

Protecting Wood Siding Near Grade

Wood siding within six inches of the ground is especially vulnerable — it sits in direct contact with ground-level embers, moisture-wicked soil, and accumulated debris. We treat this zone with fire retardant coatings and recommend installing a non-combustible barrier (metal flashing or masonry) between the soil line and the siding to eliminate this common ignition point.

4

Defensible Space Land Management

Beyond the immediate structure zone, we manage vegetation in two additional zones: Zone 1 (5–30 feet) where plants are spaced, pruned, and kept green; and Zone 2 (30–100 feet) where fuel load is reduced through thinning, mowing, and removal of dead material. This layered approach slows fire spread and reduces flame length before it reaches your home.

5

Ladder Fuel Removal

Ladder fuels — low branches, shrubs, and tall grasses growing beneath trees — allow ground fire to climb into the tree canopy and become a far more dangerous crown fire. We remove these connections using hand tools and equipment, breaking the vertical fuel chain and keeping any fire on the ground where it is more manageable.

Our Process

01

Property Assessment

We walk your property to evaluate fuel load, terrain, structure placement, and access. You receive a written mitigation plan with recommended scope and timeline.

02

Permitting & Planning

Our team handles any required local permits and coordinates with your county fire district to ensure the work meets all defensible space requirements.

03

Land Clearing

Heavy equipment crews remove brush, dead timber, and ladder fuels. All debris is chipped, hauled, or managed on-site per your preference and local regulations.

04

Substrate Coating Application

Where applicable, our technicians apply fire-resistant coatings to structures and combustible surfaces, ensuring full coverage and proper cure time.

05

Final Walkthrough

We walk the completed project with you, document the work for your insurance provider, and schedule any follow-up maintenance visits.
